In RT, voluntary patrolling have become more relevant in Selangor
SHAH ALAM: The Rukun Tetangga (RT) and its voluntary patrolling scheme (VPS) have become more relevant in Selangor with greater public awareness of their role in helping the government combat crime, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon. He said in almost two and a half years, the number of RT sectors in Selangor had increased by 26 per cent from 495 in 2007 to 624 now.
"However, the number of voluntary patrolling schemes had increased by more than 100 per cent from 116 in 2007 to 233 now," he said at the launching of the state-level Unity Month celebration, here, tonight.
"This shows good public support for the scheme and their realisation that they too need to be involved in keeping their own neighbourhood safe, thus contributing to one of the National Key Result Areas, that is, reducing crime."
Koh said he was now collaborating with Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to create a safety network comprising RT, police, Rela (People's Volunteer Corps), Civil Defence Department and Rakan Cop to get more people to participate in keeping their areas safe.
At the function, Koh also presented the "Unity Hero" award to Abdul Halim Mohamed Redzuan, one of the 12 Malaysian volunteers on board the Mavi Marmara ship which was attacked by Israeli forces while ferrying humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza recently.
He also handed over financial grants of RM1,000 each to the top unity kindergarten, RT sector and VPS in Selangor.
Abdul Halim, 40, is the deputy chairman of the Taman Desa Indah RT sector in Klang and is a technical executive with Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas). He went to Gaza as a representative of Muslim Care Malaysia.
Abdul Halim, in his speech, said his involvement in RT which carried out voluntary patrolling in his neighbourhood had taught him how to be a good volunteer.
"We have to stay awake and face the risk of facing robbers when conducting night patrols, just like my experience in facing the Israeli commondos who acted like pirates on board the Mavi Marmara," he said.
He said since there was voluntary patrolling in his neighbourhood, the crime rate there had gone down. -- BERNAMA
